I think this will be my last post in the blog for a while ... the Facebook page for Taufua Beach Fales is proving really popular, and is a much more interactive way for you to send messages to Tai and Sili, and to even upload your own fan pictures of your holidays and memories :o)

If you haven't already, please head on over to the Facebook page and become a fan! We have over 300 fans already.

There is a new note up today telling about the new open fales on the beach (four of them are up!) and there are some pics there too.

Farewell to Sili and the kids :o(

We just came back from saying goodbye to Sili and the kids. They all fly out tonight, except for Sina who is staying an extra week.

It was so sad to farewell them - we'll miss being able to pop down to Manurewa and hang out at Fa'asega's place. There might be a farewell next week for Sina, so maybe we'll see Ben and Fa'asega again then.

I printed off a bunch of photos in A4 size, and framed them for Sili to take back for Tai. I hope she will hang them up in the restaurant, or maybe up in the new house. There are some really great shots ... mostly of the family and of the old man and the kids etc.

Sooo ... now it's a matter of us saving our money and sorting out a few affairs here, and seeing whether or not we can get back to Samoa for an extended period of time, to give them a hand up there. If not, we'll continue to do all we can from here.

I see that many people are checking out the Taufua Beach Fales Facebook page - that's great! I only set up the page on Thursday and it has nearly 200 fans already. It's awesome because you all can post up your photos and comments, whereas here on this blog, y'all just have to listen to me!! LOL! I'll keep updating this blog, but please also visit the Facebook page here and become a fan :o)

Fantastic news for Tai and Sili ...

... and a new outlook for Mika!

Many of you who have visited Taufua Beach Fales in the past, or who were there on the day of the tsunami, will have met Mika, the crazy Tokelauan guy who works for the UN in Apia. Mika is a very very long time friend of the Taufua's, so much so that he is part of the family. You will hear him refer to Tai and Sili, as "mum and dad".

In the days before the tsunami Mika had been staying at Lalomanu, and on the night before it, he decided to go back into Apia. When the earthquake and tsunami struck the next morning, Mika rushed back down to Lalomanu with his friend Morten. Mika had undergone shoulder surgery about three weeks prior, and had his arm in a sling, but still he and Morten managed to drive down there at breakneck speed, having to move plenty of trees and debris on the way, and absolutely terrified of what they were going to find when they got there.

Mika and Morten worked closely with the UN and Nynette Sass from the SHA (Samoa Hotels Association) that day, to evacuate many of the stranded tourists back to Apia, and to suitable accommodation. Thank goodness for Mika's solid training in disaster management; I think many will agree that he did a fantastic job on the day under the most terrible of circumstances.

Anyhow, the point of this post is to tell you that Mika has decided to move down to Lalomanu and be on hand to help Tai and Sili on a more permanent and regular basis. Having Mika onsite to help out will be a godsend for Tai and Sili, and we're also rapt about it! We're finding it hard being so far away when all we want to do is to be there to support Tai and Sili at this time, and in the coming months as they rebuild the fales up the hill and start to receive guests into their home once again.

In the meantime, we'll just have to be patient, or as the Samoans say, "onosa'i lou lotu", which I think means, patience is a blessing!! We'll continue to do what we can from here, with the help of all of you out there, via the interwebs.

Another WST$2,200 to Tai today

Thanks to the continued kindness and generosity of all of you out there, today I've sent another WST$2,200 across to Tai via Western Union. She's a bit cash-strapped right now, so it will be a true godsend.

Thanks so much to all of you who continue to send funds! Please know that it is going right to the source, where it's needed. Now that the restaurant is up and running, Tai is able to give employment to people in the village so they can support themselves and their families once again. It's going to be a long, hard road, but if anyone can do it, Tai can.

From what I know, Faiiu (Faye) is back in the kitchen helping out, and Lata is doing the office accounting and taking care of the incoming reservations. I can't wait to get back over there!!

Again, heartfelt thanks to all. You guys rock!

In this video, Sili and tai are talking about the rebuilding on the beach and what they intend to do on the land. I found the clip on this website.

It loads really slowly, so let it load with the sound off (takes ages!!) and then go back to it a bit later so you can watch it in it's entirety. My guess is that it was taken a few months ago, but it has some fantastic images on it that I know many of you will love to see!

Of course the restaurant has now been built and much of the sand reclamation has been done, but as Sili says in this clip, the sea will continue to do it's job and slowly the sand will be replaced naturally.

Malo lava all ... below is an updated *thankyou* list of all those people who have kindly contributed to the rebuild of Lalomanu village in some way.

This evening I'm going to send out an email to everyone I have email addresses for, directing them to this blog, to make sure they are all aware of how the rebuild is coming along, and how the funds have been used. Looks like the restaurant will be officially open on Friday (Samoa time) this week ... so that's a huge leap forward.

Still the family is waiting for funding to be distributed by the Samoan government, so just about everything they've achieved to date has been accomplished through the kindness and generosity of folks like yourselves!

I'd also like to take this opportunity to say that the bank and PayPal accounts are still open, and that we're still collecting funds. Until the Samoan government steps up and helps out financially, then progress is going to be in small steps, and with the 2010 tourist season approaching, they really want to be up and running so they can get the village self-sufficient once more.

Many thanks to you all, and on behalf of Tai and Sili, I hope you have a wonderful 2010 ahead of you! On that note, Sili is now taking bookings for the Mountain View Fales ... so get your booking in now!

ZUMBA! Raise money for Samoa :o)

If you're in Auckland and have been wondering what the new Zumba dance / fitness craze is all about ... well here's your chance! I received this in my email this afternoon from Lynette, who we met in Samoa a few years ago. Go along and enjoy, and raise money for Samoa at the same time! Alofa tele xx

I thought I would let you know about a Samoa Tsunami fundraiser happening this Friday night at the Carrington Road Unitec, Mt Albert, Auckland, at 7.30pm.

It is a “Zumba” dance / aerobics class organised by the NZ team who have brought Zumba to NZ. Trudy, Debbie and I have been going to some of their classes.

Ticket prices are $25 and registration is at 7pm; they hope to get 300 people participating in the class. Believe me when I say Zumba is so much fun!

Taufua Beach Restaurant - latest pics!

Talofa to all! I had an email from Mika today, he's spent the best part of the last week down at Lalomanu covered in paint and banging in nails!! lol!!

The new restaurant is almost done - and we've got the pics to prove it! You can see them here - that's a link to Facebook. It's too time consuming to upload pics to the blog. But here's a teaser ...

Mika says they are working very hard to have the restaurant open by Friday. Lots of painting and building and Tai is very busy looking for the equipment she needs to have it all up and running.

Mika has asked that for any guests returning in the near future, would it be possible maybe to bring a metal detector they can borrow just for the duration of your stay? There are still a lot of sharp metal objects buried in the sand, and a metal detector would help them find and dispose of some of these. It will be a long and ongoing task, but might help a lot in the first instance. If anyone can help with that, please get in touch with either myself or Mika and let us know ... many thanks.

The other thing we want to let you know, is that if anyone else has funding they would like to contribute, the accounts are still open. Currently Tai has all the building materials they need, but there are still contracted workers to pay for etc, and still no financial aid from the government! So if you have a few $$ you would like to contribute, I can promise you it will go straight to Tai :o) Thanks so much.

Barbeque in Raglan - huge thanks to Diane, Brent and Andy

Last week Diane invited us to come down to Raglan today (Sunday 10 January) and join in with Sili, Fa'asega, Ben Taufua and the Samoan kids who are currently here in Auckland. Brent, Diane and Andy are hosting them all for two nights, and there was big excitement about the road trip!

We arrived in Raglan around 1.00pm today minus Fa'asega and Sopaima. Fa'asega's foot was a bit sore, so Ben will come back to Auckland with Peter later today, and then he and Fa'asega will drive back down to Raglan tomorrow. Sopaima has a dose of the good old Kiwi flu and didn't feel like going very far!

Diane and Brent had contacted many of the survivors of the tsunami who had been staying at Taufua at the time, and lots of them were there today. They've all been in constant contact since it happened.

We were given a wonderful welcome by Clint Baddeley, Deputy Mayor of Raglan, who is also a very long time friend of Andy White. It is patently obvious that the tsunami and the loss of Andy's wife Mary Ann has affected this small community greatly, and they are really pleased to have the Taufua family survivors come and stay with them, and to share some stories. I'm sure they'll have many laughs too.

Ben Taufua thanked Clint Baddeley, and explained that through the tragedy that happened, the families of the perished and the survivors would always be linked. It was an emotional speech and not many dry eyes. Ben also explained about the phases of the rebuild, and what each one would entail. The restaurant on the beach reopened yesterday - so that was great news! There is still a huge official reopening planned for September this year, so book your holidays soon if you would like to be there for it ... I know for sure that me, Greg and Peter will be definitely there.

It was wonderful to see Olivia again ... this time minus the wheelchair and now on crutches. Her next big goal is to be able to get around without the crutches! I have some great pics of her and Otele, who most likely saved her life by carrying her to the hospital on his back. He was so keen to see her again, and it was great to see them reunited under much more pleasant circumstances.

It was the first time we'd met Kerry and Lynne Martin, parents of Petria and Rebecca who perished in the tsunami. It was an emotional meeting for them and Sina; the obvious common denominator being the loss of their children.

There were many people present who I'd only chatted to via Facebook or email ... so it was wonderful to put the faces to the names! So many different stories, and some very similar to ours. The *ifs* and *buts* and the *what ifs* ... it really doesn't bear thinking about, but how can you stop yourself? There certainly were some lucky escapes and obviously some not-so-lucky ones.

We had a lovely barbeque lunch, and all too soon it was time for Greg and I to head back to Auckland, and to the reality that spells W-O-R-K tomorrow! That's a bit of an unwelcome concept right now ;o)

So all the kids and Sili are safely esconced in Raglan, and probably running riot through the streets having a fine old time this evening!! It's a wonderful setting and not *too* close to the water, and everyone seemed to be having a great time and settling in. I really wish Tai could have been here, she would have loved to see everyone and to give them all a big hug, but she's just too busy right now in Samoa with the restaurant and the rest of the construction.

Oh - and there was a local reporter there who talked to many of the survivors, so it looks like there may be a story in their local paper. I'll post a link when I find it.

Family Fiafia in Manurewa!

What a splendiferous day!

There must have been almost 100 people out at Fa'asega's place yesterday. We arrived about 3pm, just as the family arrived back from their huge big group lunch at Happy Days. A karaoke machine was wheeled in, and the fun started :o) Our Samoan friends sure have beautiful voices. And heaps of the songs were Samoan songs, so it was lovely to hear the voices ringing out - just like being back on the motu (island)!

Everyone stood up and said which part of the family they are from, and it was great to see so many people there. I am sure that's not even half of them! Such a huge lot of descendants, all heartily proud of their lineage, heritage and country. That's one of the things I absolutely adore about our Samoan family ... their huge pride in who they are and where they come from :o)

As the evening went on, every family had to do an item, and that is what the fia fia was comprised of. There were adults singing and dancing to traditional Samoan songs, through to the young kids who dressed up as Michael Jackson and did some brilliant dancing to a montage of his greatest hits! Fantastic entertainment.

The Taufua Beach Fale contingent did three numbers, and with Ulalia, Pola, Mepa and Sieni dancing up the front, and Sio, Viali and Vai behind, it was almost like being back on the beach at Lalomanu. Bitter sweet to hear those same songs that we've sang along to and danced to so many times before. Kalofae.

My favourite item of the night though was Luse's 19 year old daughter Evander, who sang a song she had written about the tsunami, called "Sudden Sunsets". It was so beautiful, and I'm sure I wasn't the only one who had a few tears. Her cousins Jordon and Gabriel accompanied her on guitar and did back up vocals, and it was an extremely WOW few minutes! Blessings and thanks to those talented three young people for sharing that with us all :o) If only now I could get Luse to record them performing and to put it on youtube ... how amazing it would be to be able to share it with all of you out there.

The committee did an amazing job of putting together the entire program that ran over the Christmas and New Year break, they worked really hard, as did the MC's, Sugar and Spice!! Well done and thanks to you all for allowing us to come and share it with you.

Last night was also our goodbye to Mepa and Tua, as they flew back to Samoa with Galo this morning. But they'll be back soon as Galo starts school on 02 February and Mepa starts Uni the last week in Feb. So lots of planning to do, and Mepa needs to get back here and find a new laptop!! lol

It was great to see Sili too, he looks very well and relaxed although I think he's missing Samoa, and Tai. Ake was in fine form, I have a great vid that I'll upload later! She is such a scamp! lol

Uncle Ben Taufua was there too, and I really enjoyed having a good talk to him about the building progress and how things are coming along over there. It's ages since I'd seen him. He says it's very hard work over there, but they are so determined to succeed and I have no doubt that they will do so! Ben will be travelling back and forwards as much as he can, to lend as much assistance as possible.

Next weekend we have another really special treat in store; me, Greg and Peter are going down to Raglan on Sunday with Fa'asega and the crew, to meet up with Diane, Brent, Andrew and many of the other kiwis who were staying at Taufua Beach Fales on the day of the tsunami, 29 September. It will be nice to meet up with them again, and for them also to spend some time with the Taufua family. I'm really looking forward to it, and Fa'asega is too! She's really excited about the visit, and has even hired a van already to transport everyone down there.

Fiafia at Fa'asega and Ben's house tomorrow!!

As a fitting finale to the end of the Christmas and New Year program that's been in progress out at Fa'asega and Ben's place, tomorrow there will be a big fiafia. I can't wait!

I'm assuming it might be like Christmas day, when there were almost 100 family members in attendance. The festivities will be going for the entire day, but we'll go about 2pm and catch the latter half of the day.

The camera batteries are being charged, and I promise we'll take heaps of pics and put some of them up here. This will also be the last time we see Mepa, Tua and Galo as they'll be leaving to go back to Samoa on Tuesday. I'll really miss Mepa, but it won't be long before she'll be back here in Auckland and furiously studying at uni - a wonderful Human Rights Lawyer in the making :o)

So! Off to bed for me now so I can get up early in the morning and start getting some food ready to take to the fiafia!

Another NZD$3,800 for Tai and Sili :o)

Thanks to many of you very generous and kind hearted people, I have today transferred another NZD$3,800 across to Tai and Sili's account in Samoa. This will really help them out as funds are at a low with all the work that's been going on lately.

I had a note from Mika (that's Mika from the UN who was helping to evacuate guests on the day of the tsunami) and he said he was down at Lalomanu with Tai and the crew on 26 December, helping to try and get the restaurant finished. Apparently it was raining most of the day! Mika is going out there again this weekend to camp out and help out.

This coming Monday, 04 January, there is a family gathering out at Fa'asega and Ben's house in Takanini, and it ends with a fia fia so me, Greg and Peter will definitely be there for that! Stand by for lots of pics :o)

Tai's Restaurant on the beach - update

Tai was aiming for 25 December (Samoan time) to have the restaurant at the beach up and running. When we met up with Sili on 26 December, he sadly told us that she hadn't achieved that goal. The ablution block wasn't ready in time, but that wasn't really the main issue.

The main issue was that there was a container of goods that had been sent from New Zealand, and these were to be used in the new restaurant. Things like cooking equipment and fridges. After a long search, lots of phone calls and a bit of detective work, the container was finally located in Apia, but unfortunately it was empty. As you can imagine, this has put them well behind as they now have to source additional equipment, and also find the funds to pay for it. There has still been no funding from the government, and so everything the family have done so far is with their own funds, and the funds that have been kindly contributed by family, friends and past guests of Taufua Beach Fales. Funds are now at an all time low.

Sadly, this is not the only container of goods consigned to the Taufua family to go missing! Well-meaning friends and relatives have very generously sent quite a few containers over but not all of the items within those containers have been received into Lalomanu village, or to the Taufua family. It's sad, but that's what happens there. That's why I'm so glad we started up our bank account to be a collection point for funds! At least we know exactly where the NZD$65,000 contributed by kind friends and past guests has gone to.

I have a small amount in the account at the moment, and after talking to Fa'asega yesterday, I'll arrange this week for that to go directly up to Tai. I was going to pass it to Sili whilst he's here in New Zealand, but it looks like Tai could do with it right now, so it will be done as soon as the banks reopen here.

Visit to Sili, Fa'asega and Ben - 26 Dec 09

Me, Greg and Peter went to Fa'asega (Tai's sister) and Ben's place yesterday to visit with them and Sili, plus all the kids who came over with Sili.

It was wonderful to see them all!! Sina and Magi are also there, and it was fantastic to catch up with Sina. We hadn't seen her since she was in hospital in Apia, and so it was wonderful to see her smiling and laughing again! I had put together a small book of photos for her, so we had a few tears and chose some pics that I'll enlarge and take up to Samoa with me when we next go. We also had a few laughs about the kids and the funny stuff they used to do!

The family had a huge service on Christmas Day, and there were almost 100 people in attendance at Fa'asega and Ben's house. Rose bushes for each of the loved ones lost in the 29 September tsunami tragedy were planted in the front garden. Beautiful roses, and an amazing array of colours.

We stayed for a few hours, had a few drinks and a lovely lunch too. It was so nice to catch up! Fa'asega is slowly getting better, as are the others, but it will take a lot of time yet. We hope to get back out to Takanini and visit them again soon.

Otele is being collected today by some people he met in Lalomanu during the time of the tsunami, who are taking him up north for a few days to their holiday home for some R & R. He is really excited about it, and can't wait to see his friend Josh.

To those who have been following Mepa's application to Auckland University, you will be ecstatic to know (as we are) that Mepz has been accepted to do LLB next year, 2010. She is over the moon!

We are so proud of her too. And that means she'll be here for four years so I get to see her lots and lots! This is the best Christmas present ever. Well done uso - you will be fabulous!!

Thanks to everyone for all the gorgeous Christmas wishes that have been flooding into my inbox for Tai, Sili and the family. Much appreciated!! You guys all rock :o)

As we get ready to celebrate with our nearest and dearest on Christmas day, I know that your thoughts are with our Pacific friends who will have empty spaces at their Christmas tables this year. It's been a hard few months for many, but the wonderful spirit of our Pacific sisters and brothers will prevail.

Sili and the kids in Auckland next week :o)

Sili and the kids will be in Auckland this coming week, staying mainly out in the South Auckland area with family. We'll meet up with them at some stage, and will do our best to get Otele down to Raglan to meet up with some people he helped on the day of the tsunami. He is very keen to see them, and the feeling is mutual!

Tai is staying in Samoa to take care of the opening of the beach restaurant at Lalomanu. Hopefully that will happen right around Christmas time.

So all up I *think* there will be 15 of them coming to Auckland, including Sili and Otele. Will confirm that once I hear from Sili again. It's been quite difficult for him with very patchy dial-up internet access down at Lalomanu.

OK! That's all the news for now. Will update as I hear more.

Taufua Mountain Site ... a few pics of the building

Sili just sent through these images of where the six new fales are being built, behind the main family house up the hill at Lalomanu.

At this stage they are targeting end of February 2010 to finish at least six double units (12 rooms) to cater for up to 24 guests. They will endeavour to have the restaurant and swimming pool (at the same site) ready for around the same time so that they can open the accommodations for guests in late February or early March 2010.

It will be a little while longer before any fale accommodation is built down at the beach.

Taufua Beach Fales - new restaurant and ablution block

These images just arrived from Sili.

They were taken a few days ago down at the beach, and show the new construction of the restaurant and ablution block, which will be in the same location as they were previously. The foundations where the Taufua family homes stood have been demolished.

This is the new restaurant that's being built on the old foundations. I see a few of the original trees are there - nice to see them still there.

This is the new toilet block, being built in the same location as the old one.

This pic shows the sand reclamation that's been done. Previously, the entire root structure of these trees was visible. Looks like there has been a lot of work done.

Tai is attempting to get the restaurant open by the end of next week, in time for Christmas. This means that her trip to New Zealand will be delayed, but Sili is still coming over next week. We can't wait to see his handsome face :o)

You might have seen this in the paper today ...

This is what Sili has been working so hard to do; to try and get the funding from the Samoan government to help with the rebuild. What they (the Taufua family) have done so far has been possible with the generous help of the lovely people who have contributed to the fundraising efforts for Lalomanu, and with their own funds. There has still been nothing contributed from the government.

Hopefully the Christmas party this weekend at Lalomanu will put a smile on many faces. Sili tells me that they have all been practising their singing!!! Can't wait.

I posted this a few weeks back, regarding the Christmas Party being held at Lalomanu this weekend. I've been talking to Mihi Forbes from TV3, and there are heaps of surprises in store!! If anyone sees any advertising as to when it will be on here in NZ, please let me know :o)

They've received lots of nominations for the Mazda surprise packs. Can't wait to see what happens!!!

I did some investigation - which involved asking just about everyone on my Facebook list if they knew of a way to contact them! Well, Matala had Kine on her Facebook, and she's now on mine too. Find her there if you like, add her and you can get in contact with Siona that way.

Sili is really busy right now with the government, trying his best to find out what contribution will be coming to the beach fale owners at Lalomanu, and when they can hope to receive it. Way to Go ... House of Travel!

Yes folks ... the fundraising continues!

I had an email today from Amie, Team Leader of the South Pacific team for House of Travel. Amie and I have been in touch since the tsunami, as not only have Amie and her family been and stayed with the Taufua family and loved it there, Amie's friend Olivia was one of the people who was staying at Taufua and was severely injuried when the tsunami hit.

House of Travel have several different packages up for auction on Trademe ... you can view them here.

If you're in the market for some accommodation or a break away - get in now! To date they have raised approximately $6,000. Well done to the team at House of Travel! You guys rock!!

A few more words from Sili ...

Thank you - we have come this far after swimming together with all that existed at Lalomanu Beach on the day (29/09/09) of the Tsunami. We are pleased to announce that the work on the rebuilding of Taufua Beach Fales are underway. There are two sites in which the work is being carried out.

Beach Site

There are two major works to be undertaken.

First is the sand reclamation on the beach. This work started on 19 Nov. The sand reclamation will cover also the beach areas where the overflow fales were. This includes Sieni Ropeti, Taufua B & B, and Romeo Beach Fale.

Temporary beach fales for day visitors will be erected. Along with the fales will be a takeaway shop and bar. An ablution block will also be built.

The permanent beach fales will be built next year when the second major work on the beach site is completed.

Second is the construction of a retaining wall at the foot of the mountain along with the landscaping of where the family dwellings used to be. The retaining wall and landscaping will be done in stages to cover the land areas occupied by Taufua Beach Fales, Sieni Ropeti, Taufua B & B and Romeo beach fales.

The site plan for the retaining wall and the proposed village like design of the beach fales will be published on the website as soon as it comes to hand.

Mountain Site

Many of those who were guests at Taufua Beach Fale in July and September 09 have visited the mountain site where the Emergency House is being constructed. That house is almost complete and will be the family home and emergency house.

Between the family home and the edge of the cliff will be the double units. Building material for six units has arrived and the work on the foundations and slabs for two units has commenced.

The building of units will be in two stages. First is the construction of the six units, the Restaurant and the Bar. This will be followed by the swimming pool and six more units.

The units or accommodation on the mountain is an extension of Taufua Beach Fale and will be called Taufua Mountain View.

Yesterday we had to fell trees for posts and got our thatches from Laulii, which is close to Apia. We will start "stitching " the thatches on Tuesday.

BBQ at the Pukeko Palace! 21 Nov 09

Yesterday we had Mepa, Tua and Galo over for a BBQ and to stay the night. As an added bonus, Uili joined us! What a fabulous surprise, as we thought Uili and Tanisha had already gone down to the Hawkes Bay to live. But no, they're still in Auckland so we had Uili for the evening too! :o)

Was a fantastic BBQ; Pip and Peter also joined us. Much fun had by all. Here's a few pics - more on Facebook.

Fale construction

Sili Facebooked me this morning (yes, he's on Facebook!) to say that Johnny (the friendly and fabulous builder) has left Lalomanu and headed up to Apia for his last few days to get a bit of rest. He's been a bit unwell and just needs some wind down time before heading back to New Zealand. It's not easy to work in that heat and in less than ideal conditions.

Sili's going to get me some plans in the next week or so, so I can put them up here for your perusal.

Samoans in Auckland - YAY!

Tomorrow we're having Mepa, Tua and Galo for a BBQ here in Takapuna. Can't wait to see them and have a great old catch up :o) Will post pics on Sunday.

Tai is also currently in NZ for the funeral of a close relative who passed away this week - kalofae. Jeeze when will it stop? Let's hope 2010 brings a lot more happiness for Samoa. May the sun shine :o)

Update on Mika the tour guide

Many people have asked me about Mika, who does the Lalomanu cliff tours and island tours for Taufua. I didn't see him when we were in Samoa as many families were displaced and I heard that he was staying with relatives in Apia.

Sadly, I also heard through Lata that he lost his two youngest children, plus his mum and his mother in law. Very sad. Sili didn't know if he was back at Lalomanu or not. If I find out anything more, I'll post it up.

Answers to the shoutbox questions :o)

OK - updates on individuals that I know of.

Otele - he is fine, he's spending his time between the new house at Lalomanu and the house in Apia where the family have been for the last month or so. As far as I know, he'll be coming to Auckland with the rest of the family on 22 December for a break.

Sina - as per my recent blog post, Sina is fine and her and Magi will be travelling for three months, leaving very soon. First they're going to Australia, then across to New Zealand to meet up with the rest of the family, and then on to the USA where Sina has some family. They're okay, they're just taking their time and taking each day as it comes.

Celia - I saw Celia when I was in Apia, and we had a huge big hug in the food market! I think she's staying with family in Apia, but not 100% sure. She might be back down at the village by now.

Lata - She had her baby very recently, it was a little girl! Mum and bubs fine :o)

Vai - If you're asking about Tai's son Vai, yes he's good. He's back at school and has just completed his exams for the year. He's looking forward to coming to New Zealand for a break. It's been a very hard time for him, being only 14 and having been through what he's been through in the past few months. He's a great kid.

Mepa - Mepa's good. She'll be here in Auckland on Monday with Tua and Galo, staying out at Mt Roskill with her sister Via. Mepa will be busy in the next few weeks, applying to Auckland University, but we're hoping to catch up with her as much as we can until she gets tired of us ;o)

Siona - There seems to be a huge amount of interest in Siona - I get questions about him all the time. I saw him several times in Apia, he's good. He's gone to Norway with Kina (his girlfriend) and will be there for the next three months or so. After that ... I have no idea.

Sam - Sam is good. I saw him in Apia too. He was staying in Apia to be near the hospital as his dad was very badly injured. Sam lost his mum, and his three sisters (Tofi, Fay and Lesa) lost six children between them. Sili told me that Tuese (Sam's dad) has now had a fale built down at Lalomanu, and he and the family are back down there now.

A personal thank you from Tai and Sili

This just arrived from Sili, and he asked me to post it on the blog. So here you go ...

Dear Friends,

It is 11 November 2009, 43 days after the tragedy that claimed 14 lives of our loved ones. It has been a big test in faith for Tai and I who minded the big family in Samoa. Our minds and souls have been so busy in reassuring ourselves and pondering over the possible opportunities to rebuild the family and to be able to provide jobs that were interrupted by the devastation caused by the Tsunami, that we did not realise more than a month had wafted over us.

I had to telephone Tina this afternoon, as we hardly find time to do emails. Tina was updated on what is going on with Tai and I in Samoa.

Somehow, I re-visited Tina's blog and discovered that she and Greg had written much more than the last I visited the blog. I broke down and wept as my soul longed to reach out and embrace all the warm hearted people that were listed in the blog by Tina & Greg.

It is with great joy, and I am sure Tai joins me, in the realisation that we have a bigger family out there in the world. The very family that has assisted and driven Tai and I to persist or persevere in the development of Taufua Beach Fales that has brought much joy to Tai and to all of you out there.

Please allow me to convey on behalf of Tai and the survivors of our household our sincerest gratitude and appreciation for the comiseration messages, kind words and all form of donations.

May God reward you manifold.

Sili Apelu

Update from Sili

I had a phone call from Sili today ... wonderful to talk to him!

He had a heap of updates to give me, and was getting very annoyed with the internet connection so he figured it was easier to call and to tell me about it! Fair enough. It saved him from throwing the computer out the window with frustration, anyway :o)

An old friend of Tai and Sili, Brian, is currently at the Lalomanu house doing the tiling on all the house floors. Tai is on her way down there today with extra grout and food supplies. She had only just left Apia by about 30 minutes when Deb and Johnny the builder arrived at the house at Avele, Apia. Bad timing! However, Johnny and Sili immediately became best friends and were engrossed in the plans that Sili was just going over when they arrived. Sili's son in law Alan (an architect and landscape designer) has been drawing and revising the plans over the past few weeks, and they are getting pretty close to complete.

Johnny just flew in last night, having spent a couple of weeks in Hawaii, then back to NZ for a day, then over to Samoa. He lost and gained a day here and there so I'm not sure he knows actually what's hit him yet!

Deb is taking Johnny back with her and Ian to Moata'a for the night, and Sili will collect him in the morning and take him down to the house at Lalomanu, where he'll be able to meet the rest of the family who are already down there, and settle in before he starts pouring concrete slabs.

Over the past week, Tai and Sili have purchased all the building materials they need to build six brand new units up by the house on the hill. Over the next few days, there will be five truck loads of bricks, and five truckloads of timber and cement boards delivered, plus all the other building stuff that sticks it all together. The only things they haven't bought yet is the roofing iron, tiles and air conditioning units. Sili thinks the air con units might be cheaper in NZ. If anyone has a contact for air con units ... please shout out! Thanks.

Now that the house on the hill is almost complete, Tai and Sili and all the family currently in Apia will be moving to the Lalomanu house this weekend. They are really looking forward to getting back to their village, and all their friends and neighbours. Johnny won't even need to use his tent - he'll be able to stay in the house with everyone else :o) The plumbers are there today working on getting a toilet up and going (yay - goodbye porta loo!!) and I'm sure everyone will be glad about that.

Sili says that the build will start with the concrete pouring for the slabs, and that should happen in the next few days once Johnny is all settled in. They'll construct two units first, and get as much of them done as possible before Johnny leaves. Then they'll use the finished ones as a model on which to build the others, using whatever local talent / labour they can find. Both Sili and Johnny agree that that will be the easiest way to do it.

Sili is hoping the six units will be built and ready for guests by February next year. Not long away, really! Then they'll have a look at what they will do on the beach. That part seems to be coming along a lot slower. But still, if there are other builders etc out there who want to help, just please get in touch and let us know.

Tai and Sili spent two hours in the immigration office yesterday, completing all the paperwork for the reissue of everyone's passports. Today Sili is off to the NZ Embassy to get visitor visas for all the family who are coming to visit at Christmas! So it's now official; they arrive on 22 December and will stay for a few weeks. Not only will it be a good break away for them all, but it will allow some of the family to have follow up medical treatment here for ongoing injuries caused in the tsunami. A few people have issues that need to be cleared up, and that's best to be done here in Auckland.

Sina and Mani are very shortly off to Australia to visit some relatives over there, and then they'll head over this way to meet up with the rest of the family in Auckland. After that they'll be heading across to the USA to stay with some of Sina's family who have offered them that opportunity. All up they'll be travelling for about three months, and that will give them some quality time together. I'm sure they'll need it, after all they've been through.

Sili has been continuing his discussions with the government, and is still awaiting an outcome as to what government assistance may be offered to the business. All the other affected property owners are in the same situation.. It's been a long and tiring month for him. Tai is taking care of all the other stuff, with Macy in tow! Memorial Service today in Parnell

Malo lava to all ... it was a beautiful service today. The singing of the Tongan and Samoan choirs was out of this world! When the Tongans started up, it was just mind blowing. Wonderful all round.

It was great to see everyone, and to put some faces to the names on my Facebook :o) It was also fantastic to see some members of the Taufua family and to have a chat to them. It made me feel a bit home sick for the motu and for Tai and Sili, Vai, Sio, Lusi, Viali, Otele, Siene, Sine, Sina, Magi, Sopaima ... you get my drift.

Aunty Faasega is looking much better, and her foot is healing well. Uncle Ben looked resplendent - first time I have seen him dressed as a Reverend! Lovely to see everyone :o)

Introducing Johnny Simmons - builder extraordinaire :o)

Well, Johnny Simmons is on his way to Samoa to help with the house at Lalomanu. Thanks to Jonaye for putting us in touch with him!

Johnny's currently in Hawaii - I think he's gone hunting for surf. No doubt he'll find a fair bit of that over there. On his way home he's popping into Samoa for ten days (arriving next Tuesday Samoa time), and will be collected from the airport by Deb and Ian. They'll take him to Moata'a for the night and then hand him off to Sili the following day.

Thanks Johnny for your time, and I hope you make some time to travel around a bit and to fall in love with this beautiful country. No doubt you will make friends for life and will be back to visit real soon :o)

I had an email from Sili this morning, he said there was a huge amount of work done on the house yesterday, and that he can probably cope with just having Johnny on board for a week or so. That's great news!

In other news, I've seen some recent pics of the beach and it's looking great. There's been a huge cleanup at the Litia Sini site, and they have their plans drawn up and are ready to go with their rebuild. It's fantastic news. Things seem to be moving along quite well.

I'll keep everyone posted as I know more, and I'll see if I can get permission to post the pics of the beach that I have received via email..

Plasterer? Builder? Painter? Want to help NOW??

I've had an email from Sili today - as below:

"We have an urgent need for one volunteer in each of these areas:

Plastering
Flooring (we have available ceramic tiles)
Carpenter to seed up double walling (cement boards) & ceiling
Painter - to show the many boys we have, how to do the painting.

We wonder if you can find some volunteers? 7 to 14 days duration should be fine.

The above volunteers are required to help finish the big house soonest. You may know that there are 9 cyclones forecasted for our part of the region. The cyclone season starts 01 Nov 2009 to April 2010. We are today at Lalomanu and plan to stay the night here. We are finalising the architectural plans for the double units and will let you know soon as we get the permit to build.

I shall soon have the sketch of the site where the double units will be and hope we will soon be able to begin construction. Please let me know if there is anyone out there who might be able to come to Samoa and give us a hand!"

Help needed - Manono Island and surrounds

I've been talking to my Australian friend Deb who lives in Moata'a, a small coastal village just out of Apia. Deb and Ian have been helping the people of Manono and the stricken west coast, along with helping the only vet (update - Deb says there are now 3 vets!!!) in Samoa to provide food for some of the animals who have been left homeless by the tsunami.

Memorial Service in Auckland - Sun 08 November 2009, 4.00pm

I had a lovely email tonight from a lady who was staying at Lalomanu when the tsunami hit. During that day, she gathered the contact details of many others who were staying there, and many of them got together in Auckland over the weekend to try and piece together the events of the day in their minds, and to get some peace about all that happened.

Many of them had made friends during their stay, and subsequently lost those friends during this tragedy. Anyone who's stayed at Lalomanu will know the magic of the place, and how someone you've only spent a few days with can feel like a friend you've known for life. So as you can imagine, these survivors have been through a terribly tough time.

I wasn't aware that there will be a national memorial service in Auckland this Sunday 08 November, at 4.00pm, at the Trinity Church in Parnell. I wanted to let everyone know, so that anyone who's in Auckland can come along if they want to. You can read about it here.

I hope that those of you in Auckland will be able to make it. Greg and I will be there for sure.

News from Sili in Apia

I had an email from Sili last night. He and Tai and the rest of the family are doing well, and are still at the house in Apia.

Tai and Sili spent much of yesterday (Friday Samoan time) in a meeting with many of the other affected businesses and the deputy prime minister. Now that the independent studies and profiles (on each of the affected businesses) have been completed, the government is looking at what assistance will be given to each. However red tape has emerged in the form of the government's wish to put plans, regulations and legislation in place to ensure beach fale developers will promote a green Samoa. Overall, there is a huge amount of interest in developing Lalomanu in a fashion dictated by government. Sili and Tai have asked that this be moved along quickly because they (and others) cannot afford to wait too long. The deputy PM is taking that back for discussion at Monday's cabinet meeting.

Tai and Sili's main concerns right now are to have a business to generate money so they can bring their employees back to work and provide income back to the village.

Building fales up on the hill beside the new house doesn't seem to be a problem with the government, so plans are going ahead for that to happen. Sili's son in law is working on the plans and Sili hopes to be able to share those with all of you (via this blog) in the coming weeks. Once they know how and when they'll build, we'll put out the call to see who is interested and available to go over and lend a hand. I know there are a few of you out there who want to do it!

Random thought ...

I just paid five bucks for a mango and ate it (divine!!) and it reminded me of last Christmas in Samoa when Sina, me and Uili would eat them by the bucketful.

The mango guy would come around every few days in his van and we would pounce on him. A bag of mangoes was about WST$4. Each mango would be shared thusly; one mango cheek each for me and Sina, and the seed for Uili :o)

Those were the days :o)

Update from Apia

I've been talking to Mepa over the past few days ... she's been to the Apia house to visit all the family, and Sina and Mani are also there now. Everyone is moving on a little and feeling a little better, and slowly healing.

People have started to talk a little about their experience and it sounds like it's helping. A huge group gathers every evening for the lotu (blessings, prayer and song) and I think that helps too :o)

Mepa says that Sili has been very busy completing the paperwork required to assist in the assessment of the business as it was. This will help the independent consultancy firm (KVA) to complete their study, which will be passed to the government to help them to determine what compensation will be offered. Each affected business is going through the same process, and it has to be finished by the end of the month so I think everyone has been working pretty hard on it. Sili is also helping with the paperwork for the other affected businesses in the family along that same stretch of beach, as he is the only one with a computer and of course both his written and spoken English are excellent.

Sili told me a few weeks ago that he'd only just passed a whole lot of paperwork over to their accountant prior to the tsunami, so the accountant should have a good record of how things were going. That was very good timing.

Mepa has also had a friend visiting from Germany, and that has kept her busy this week. Galo is back at school now too. Mepa and Tua are still busy doing a bit of renovation on the house at Tiapapata and it should be ready soon. It's high up in the hills and away from the coast which they are very pleased about. No one is ready to be living too near to the sea again at this early stage.

I hope to have some more news from Sili during this week, once he's done with that paperwork! As soon as I do, I'll blog it.

Mika comes to town

Mika is currently in NZ for a check up after his shoulder surgery, and so he came around yesterday for a BBQ and a sleep over. It was great to catch up, and we were able to give him some care packages for Sina and Mepa, plus a package of clothing and shoes from Via for Mepa. Good one Mika - thanks heaps for that!

Thanks also for the few laughs ... I think it was just what we all needed.

Rebuilding the fales ...

We arrived back in Auckland early last Sunday morning. The weather here is much colder, Greg is now sick with the strep throat that I had last week in Apia, and we don't go back to work until this coming Tuesday. Thank goodness it's a long weekend - it will be nice to have some down time.

We can continue to do a lot of good from here, coordinating the ongoing collection of funds and channeling it through to Tai and Sili in Samoa.

I've had heaps of enquiries regarding the rebuild - there seem to be tons of you out there with all sorts of great building skills who are really keen to go over and get stuck in. Before that can happen, all affected businesses are being assessed by an individual consultancy appointed by the Samoan Government. The assessments will take until the end of this month, and at that time, each business will have a better idea as to what Government assistance might be coming their way.

Also, the Deputy Prime Minister said that there may be some standards imposed as to the location and materials used for the construction of beach fales. This might be a driver for when, where and how they will rebuild them. Only they will be able to decide this, and it may take some time.

Consideration is also needed regarding the weather, as it's coming into the wet season and also cyclone season. Sili and Tai want to do some research into this and may base some of their building decisions on that.

They've said they would like to perhaps start with the fales up on the hill, behind the house that they started earlier this year. As soon as I have any further information on that, I'll post it up here. Once they are ready to go ahead with their rebuild, it would be fantastic if we can coordinate the keen resources from here and work out a schedule to get everyone over to help.

Once Sili is back online, we'll start talking about that, and I'll blog it here.

Sina is out of hospital now

I heard from Mepa today that Sina has been discharged from the National Hospital at Moto'otua, which is great news. I'm not sure where she is going to be staying, but I assume in the first instance it will be with Magi, Tai and Sili at the house in Vailima. Sina's family live on the west coast near the sea, and I don't think she will want to be too near the sea at this point.

It's fantastic she is out now, and that's in no small part thanks to the NZ and Australian medical team, who did such an amazing job with the skingrafts. Sina said they had surgical dressings and methods that they don't even have available in Samoa, and she said they were so kind and gentle. When I saw her last week, she was healing well.

Will post more as I hear. Thanks to everyone who has emailed me to ask about Sina :o)

Without your help with everything - from laptops and clothing, to money and rides to and from the airport - we would not have been able to do what we've done. Your heartfelt wishes, hugs and prayers have helped too :o)

Huge thanks also to Mika and Aunt Tala who put us up in Apia.

The bank account will remain open indefinitely as I know many of you are continuing to raise funds. To date we have collected approximately NZD$45,000. We'll continue to seek funding where we can (let me know if you have some ideas!!) and once we know what the plans are for rebuilding, we'll put out a call for anyone who might be able to go to Samoa for a week or two and lend a hand.

I'll continue to post any information as it comes to hand.

When I saw Sina a few days ago, she asked me to ask if anyone had recent photos of Uena and Sasa or EJ, her three children who perished in the tsunami. I said I would put out a call and see what I could find.

I'd also like any pics of Moanalei, Mepa's daughter.

Moanalei's Essay

Last week, Moanalei's school contacted Mepa to say that an essay Moanalei had written about climate change had won a competition. The competition organisers had no idea that Moanalei had passed away in the tsunami.

They asked if the family would like to come to the prize giving and receive the award for the essay, and to read it out. All the winners were to read out what they had written.

Moanalei's Grandma Sarah from Florida read the essay out, and it was fabulous. Moanalei was a member of the environment group at her school, and even though she was only 9 years old, she was very concerned about the environment, climate change and the ozone layer.

I wish I had a copy of it to scan and put up here. She had some great ideas about the environment, and in particular the seashore and marine life and what we could do to preserve it.

Can you help? Job needed in NZ for Samoan man

Can anyone help with this??

Mepa's cousin Douglas won a ballot to come and live in New Zealand with his wife and one year old son. It's dependant on him having a job offer here first, and I'm wondering if there's anyone out there who might be able to help. Dougie is 29, and has worked as a welder for the past 9 years. He has completed most of his apprenticeship, is a dedicated worker and has great references from his past jobs.

His English is good, although like many Samoans he can be quite shy and soft spoken!

He's willing to do any job. Factory, processing, packing, labouring ... anything at all that will meet the criteria. If you think you can help or want to know more, please contact me at tina.desuza@gmail.com. He will consider any offer, and has family in NZ who are able to help him with accommodation and transport.

Moanalei, Mepa's daughter

We spent the last couple of nights staying with Mepa's Aunt Tala, who has a beautiful house in Vailima, backing right onto Mt Vaea where Robert Louis Stevenson is buried.

It was wonderful to get to know Mepa's family better, they are the most amazing and loving people and made us feel so at home. We had met many of them over here in Auckland, but it was great to spend more time together and really get to know them.

They had made up a lovely board with some photos of Moanalei, which I took a few pics of.

Rest in peace little one, and fly with the angels :o)

Little Ake (Tai's daughter)

For those who have asked me about Ake, she is fine. Here she is with me, pic taken yesterday at the rented house in Vailima.

If you haven't read my earlier posting, Ake was picked up by one of the waves and deposited onto a fale roof. She surged in and out on the slowly sinking roof, until one of the guests swam out and got her onto land.

She's doing pretty well, and is so happy to have all the big kids around again :o)

Tai and Sili - out of hospital at last!! UPDATED with pics

Tai, Sili and Faasega were released from hospital yesterday, and have rented a house short-term in Apia. Faasega and Ben have travelled back to New Zealand tonight.

It's so wonderful to see Tai and Sili and the family at home together again. They've been joined by Sine and Moana, who were just released from the public hospital today. All the kids are there now too; Sio, Lusi, Vai, Siene, Pola, Viali, Ula Lea, Ake, Sopoima, Aliki's Moana ... and the list goes on. You can see them all in these pics :o)

There is a real sense of happiness that they are all together in one spot. The house has a wonderful vibe to it, and we immediately felt at home and very relaxed there. We didn't want to leave, we wanted to stay and be a part of it all.

The house at Lalomanu isn't quite finished yet, so they'll be in the Apia house for about a month or so. It's very close to the hospital at Vailima as many of the family still have dressings that need changing daily.

Many people have contacted me and said they are going to Samoa and would like to personally hand items to Tai and Sili. If you can let me know the details of when you will be there, I can put you in touch with them so you can visit them in Apia. They would love to see you.

Otele's Story

Those of you who know Otele will be pleased to know that we've spent the last couple of days with him. Well actually, he's spent the last couple of days with us.

We found him here in Apia, having just come from the dentist and having a tooth extracted. He cracked three teeth during the tsunami and one was so bad it had to come out. He's going to see how it goes with the other two.

Otele was woken by the earthquake; he was asleep in the faletele (Sina's house) across the road from the main dining fale. He ran to the beach and knocked on as many fales as he could, and yelled for everyone to get out and head to the hills.

He saw the wave coming towards him, and ran towards the palms behind the main house and umu area. The wave was too quick for him, and caught him up in it, throwing him face and chest first into a huge breadfruit tree (which is how he cracked his teeth). The tree was still standing so he climbed to the top of it, but the next wave (or possibly the suck back from the wave) pushed the tree over and it fell on top of him, winding him. He could see the light through the water and branches, and climbed his way through the branches and to the top of the water.

He swam to the hill and said he could hear people yelling and calling out his name. He pulled a girl from the water, who had a badly injured lower leg, and applied a tourniquet to staunch the flow of blood. Another of the guests (Mike) helped to bind the injured leg with strips of lavalava, and then Otele and another Samoan guy took her straight up the side of the hill to the Lalomanu district hospital. She was the second person to arrive, the first victim had arrived by car. The nurses were crying and panicking, and didn't know what to do.

Otele went back down, and pulled a few more people out of the water, including Mepa.

He hasn't said too much about the rest of that day or the next few days, apart from saying he collected as many passports and personal effects as he could find on the beach. It's still very hard for him to talk about the event, so apologies if there seem to be details missing.

We went to Otele's house today and everything there is completely destroyed. His family live on the road where the radio tower is ... and there's just nothing left. His cousin Faga (who used to work for Tai and Sili, and who knows us well) is living there under a blue tarp, and has rigged up a water tank. Faga was pretty pleased to see us and managed a huge grin.

He and Otele's brothers have made a banner that says "TSUNAMI SURVIVORZ" and it's hanging just in front of where their houses were - pic above.

It was nice to also run into a few other Lalomanu people today too, but more about that tomorrow ... internet cafe is about to close.

So what's the Samoan Government doing to help?

Well quite a lot actually. I went to a meeting with Sili yesterday, it was called by the Government of Samoa, arranged by the SHA (Samoa Hotels Association) and was attended by the Deputy Prime Minister amongst others.

The main outcomes are that the Government has appointed an independent consulting firm (KVA) who will meet with the 32 affected businesses to create a business profile and to then assess what assistance will be provided to each individual business.

The study will be completed within four weeks. There was also a very interesting question and answer session where the Deputy PM said he would speak with the minister for the environment and see what surveys / studies could be commissioned to look into the damage to the marine environment on that coast. All quite positive stuff.

There are still huge trees, bits of iron roofing, cars and other debris in the sea that can't be moved by hand. These will all need to be removed (quickly) to prevent pollution.

The other thing the Government has done is to approve a significant marketing budget to let the rest of the world know that 80 - 90% of the accommodation inventory in Samoa is still available. Savai'i was untouched, as was a lot of 'Upolu, and they definitely need the tourist dollars to roll in and keep the economy up.

So tell all your family and friends that Samoa still rocks, and Savai'i is the place to be.

Tuesday 13 October, Apia

Malo lava to all - it was White Sunday last Sunday, so Monday was a public holiday. No internet, no shops, so apologies for no update.

The last few days have been pretty quiet as we've been unable to do much except visit Tai and Sili in hospital, and to visit Mepa and Tua and family at Vailima. It's been nice to be able to do that and to talk to a lot of the families who have travelled a long way to all be together at this time.

We even managed (on an extremely hot Sunday) to get a swim in a local pool with Galo and Mana, Moanalei's little sisters. It was lovely to spend a few hours with them in the water, and there was a lot of splashing and laughter. Very enjoyable for us. It was also lovely to meet with and chat to their American grandparents from Florida. Very nice people.

Last night Mika flew to New Zealand for a check up on his shoulder. He'll be there for two weeks, and it will be strange here without him. All of us have been pretty busy so I hope he gets some time out to rest.

Today there is a Samoa Hotels Association meeting for all hotel operators, and I'm attending that with Sili. He will listen, and I'll take notes, so together we'll be a good team and find out what the SHA are going to do to help everyone. They are a great organisation and I'm sure it will be a very positive meeting. They have been fantastic so far.

Last night when we went to visit Tai and Sili, we had the most beautiful surprise. Mepa's sister Mana had just given birth to a beautiful baby girl. We were all invited in to see the baby, and to stay for a prayer and a blessing, which was just amazing. It's a wonderful thing for Tai and Sili to have this new baby granddaughter in their lives when they have just lost so much. It's also wonderful for the rest of the family to have a new niece, sister and daughter.

Tai and Sili continue to get stronger every day and it won't be long now before they're out of hospital. Sili's wound drains are out, and Tai's will be coming out very soon. They're both looking much much better, as is Faasega. Her foot is healing well.

We are off to Lalomanu again tomorrow, Greg is going to see if he can find a car to hire today. Mel and Jono leave tonight, so it will just be Peter, Greg and myself. Again we'll take down a car load of supplies and water etc and distribute it as needed.

That's all I have for now, got to run and meet Sili for the SHA meeting. Many thanks to everyone who has sent emails, pictures and contributions over the weekend - and I've even had a few phone calls too. People have been so caring, and thank you all.

Went to Lalomanu Yesterday ...

Even though we have seen the pics and footage on the news and in the papers, nothing prepares you for the total devastation of the south coast, and in particular, the south east coast.

In some parts I couldn't even recognise the villages as we went through, because all the landmarks you're familiar with are totally gone. The sea water has killed off the vegetation so you can see pretty much where the water went to. The roads are still pretty good, and a lot of the rubble etc has been cleared but it was just heartbreaking.

The graves old and new, the new flower wreaths ... just so many of them. People everywhere, cleaning up, cooking in their tent shelters. The church vans driving through giving out bedding, clothing and kettles to boil water in. The battered upside cars, looking like they've been in a wreckers yard for years. The army, doing their best to connect a water pipe across to Namua Island. The local hospital at Lalomanu, with it's team of NZ doctors doing their best to treat the local people. Not only for physical injuries, but to help them cope with the devastation.

We stopped at Taufua Beach Fales, and stood on the concrete steps outside what used to be the office. The floor and tiles for the office, old dive shop, bar and kitchen are still pretty much intact. The blue tiles of the main dining fale floor have all but gone. There is a small patch there, but that's it.

The talie tree with the shower (outside the office) is still there, as is Moanalei's tree which used to overhang the decking. That's where Moanalei and all the other kids used to sit during the fia fia - the best seat in the house.

The big tree beside fale 11 (where piggy used to scratch his butt) is still there, but there is about a metre of sand gone, so you can see the entire root structure of the tree. Will get a pic up of that when I can.

The big coconut palms that were between fales 6, 7, 8 and 9 are still standing, but that's it. Nothing else. It's only by using these landmarks that you can tell where everything was.

Anita's Cocktail and Icecream bar still has it's floor base there, but nothing else.

Across the road at the Taufua house, all that remains are the bases. Sina and Magi's fale, the fale tele, has it's base and steps, and Tai & Sili's house still has the white tiles that were laid just a few months ago.

Apart from that, nothing else is recognisable. Just the base of the huge concrete water tank out the back.

Seeing all this, it's amazing to think that anyone could have survived.

We went up into the village and it was very quiet. We dropped off some supplies to Lata's mother, who was cooking at the house. She told us that Lata and the rest of the family were camping up the hill near the new Taufua house. When we got up there, we saw that there are about 4 or 5 families camping along the side of the road in a paddock. We dropped off some water and other essentials.

Tai & Sili's new house has half the roof on, and needs a fair bit of work. Hopefully we can get up there this week and give the builders a hand to finish it. It's White Sunday tomorrow though, and that means it's a holiday both Sunday and Monday. We didn't quite bank on that, so we'll do what we can.

Also in the village we saw Alofa, Junior, Lata, Beki. Otele was away in town with some friends, in fact it was the family of someone he saved during the tragedy so they had come to take him out for the day.

We also visited a very good friend Steve who lives in the upper part of the village, and who's house backs right onto the water. He showed us the back of his house where the waves came right up and into the kitchen, and ripped the gib board out of the house eaves, and buckled the roofing iron. Only a few minutes before, his old father had been standing on the back steps transfixed at the empty lagoon. Steve only just managed to get them and a neighbour out safely. Also at the back they have two graves with huge concrete tops on. One of these had been lifted of and tossed about five metres. Someone from a government weather agency came and measured their property and looked at the damage and said that the wave that damaged their house was 7.4 metres high. This fits with Sili's description of the second wave breaking on top of the main dining fale at Taufua.

We also saw Tai and Sili yesterday at the MedCen - their injuries are getting better every day, and they're getting much stronger. They're hoping to be out by the middle of next week at the latest. We took up a whole heap more clothing and shoes that Tai has already sorted into boxes (13 of them) for the completely homeless families of Lalomanu. They're all being taken down today.

That's about it from me now, it's hard to talk about this and yesterday was very emotionally charged. Will get some pics up when I can.

Greg took this pic yesterday of Tai and Sili in the MedCen hospital in Apia.

Their physical injuries are healing well, and they hope to be discharged from hospital in the next few days. Their plan is to head down to Lalomanu to the house on the hill, as that is home, and the place they want to be.

They want to send their love and thanks to everyone who has send messages of support, photos and much needed contributions to get the village of Lalomanu on it's feet again. Much of the money so far has been used for tools, food, water and basic necessities like mattresses, sheets and towels. The bank account is remaining open and any funds will be drawn down and put directly into their account. See also their website here.

The big digger and grader machines are going through Lalomanu soon (they may have even started yesterday) and that will help immensely with the clean up.

Day 3 - still in Apia

Malo lava! First off, the tsunami warning today was just precautionary after the earthquake in Vanuatu. We were already up the hill at Vailima (Mika's house) so we were okay. In fact the warning drove people up the hill and we had a nice visit with Phil and Marietta :o)

Now ... updates.

Yesterday we went to visit Sina at the public hospital, but she was in surgery. The ward there was full of people from Lalomanu. We talked to Tuese, Samasoni's and Faye's dad - he has a very bad leg injury. One of his daughters was there, but I don't know her name. She was injured and in a wheel chair. I know that Fay lost two children, but unsure of other losses in the family. We saw Sam too, he was on his way back from a funeral.

We also saw Siaose, he is the little man who comes to Taufua at night to be the watchman. He is the little one who always tells us off for being noisy and sometimes brings fa'apapaa for me and Mepa to eat. He has a very bad leg injury also, and was very glad to see us. He is obviously very traumatised. I am not sure who else he lost in his family, and his English isn't so good so I couldn't ask. Tai says he was on his way home when the wave hit.

There have been some miracle stories too. Little Ake, Tai's daughter, was picked up by the wave and thrown onto fale roof. The roof then surged in and out on the tide, sinking lower and lower. One of the guests swam out and grabbed her before the roof sank, saving her life. Ake is three years old.

Vai, Tai's son, saw that the first wave broke at Litia Sini's end of the beach, and then rolled along the entire beach. Before the second one hit, he yelled for everyone to follow him, and ran along the road (away from Litia's) and up the hill, rather than attempting to get up the hill behind the family home where it is very steep. He no doubt saved those people's lives. Vai is only 14 years old.

Sili was behind the house when the first wave hit. He thought the house was going to hold, but then the second wave took the entire back of the house out in just a split second. He was completely under water before he realised (it happened so quickly) that his back was lodged against something, and his feet were completely stuck under something. He could look up and see the light above through the water. It was maybe a half a lamp post over his head. He held his breath and waited. The third wave then broke over him, and dislodged whatever had held his feet. He was then able to surface.

Tai was trying to get to the small car, as her sisters were inside trying to get the old man out. She was opening the door, looked up, and was immediately hit by the first wave. Because the wave came in on an angle and then went out straight, it created a whirlpool effect. She was spinning around under the water for the three entire waves, holding her breath, with a fale roof stuck over her head and unable to get free of it. She scrabbled and pushed at the roof to break through it once all three waves had broken as the water was subsiding, and finally broke through it and could breathe.

There are many more stories surfacing, but it's hard to write about them.

Just bumped into Mepa in town

Many people are waiting for updates on individual people. We bumped into Mepa this morning in Apia quite by accident. She had just returned from the airport as Tua flew in today.

It was fantastic to see them, and they're staying in Apia just a few houses away from where we are in Vailima, at the very famous Mika's Garden Resort. Those who know Mika will know what I mean :o)

Mepa is doing well and her external injuries are healing. It was wonderful to see Galo although she was understandably a little quiet. From all accounts, Tua had a pretty harrowing week being stuck in Tahiti for the South Pacific Bodybuilding champs - he could not get a flight out as there's only one a week.

Despite not being able to train in the last week due to grief, Tua competed in the champs on Saturday and won a silver medal in his category. He did it for Moanalei as she was always his biggest fan, and she was so proud of him. He has amazing strength to have done this, and we are all so proud of him!

I think Mepa is giving an interview later today to Samoa TV so that may air in New Zealand. Please let me know if you see anything.

Update - Day 2 in Apia, Tue 06 Oct

Firstly, thanks so much to everyone who has donated much needed funds. Tai has asked that I endeavour to thank every single person individually, and I am trying my very hardest to do that for her, as it is extremely important to her. If I haven't gotten back to you, I promise I will.

I've lost track a little of the total we've raised, but to date it looks like in the vicinity of NZD$25,000 including the cash people have given me over here in Samoan tala. This is beyond any expectation we ever had, and if anyone will know where to direct that money for maximum effect in Lalomanu, it is Tai. I want to make sure that everyone knows it's not too late to donate, please scroll down to find my post on how to do that.

Additionally, the donated items have all been of immense help. Every piece of clothing, including shoes and toiletries, has been sorted by Tai and she has instructed what families need it most, and it's on it's way there today. Tai has been reluctant to take any of it for herself or her family. Even whilst still in the hospital and very ill she is more concerned about the people in the village who are still completely homeless.

The cellphones we collected have been given to those who need to be in touch with loved ones, and they could not believe that we just gave them to them out of the blue. What a great idea that was! We bought SIM cards for the phones and topped them up with some credit too. Awesome --- thanks to those who donated them. It makes a real difference to people.

Tai and Sili can't wait to go down to Lalomanu and get started with helping everyone, but they still need a few days to rest their bodies so they are better able to cope. The village now has some power and water is coming. Maybe a few more days.

There is a family service at Lalomanu tomorrow, so it will be then we will get our first glimpse of the devastation that was wreaked on this peaceful place only one week ago.

Now a few ways in which funds have been used so far:

- mattresses, sheets, blankets, pillow. These are being sourced today
- tools like machetes, hammers, saws. Basic construction tools for everyone's use
- toilets. Construction plans are under way
- mats, which are crucial in Samoan fales as it's not easy to sleep on bare wood or concrete or dirt
- basic underwear and associated needs, especially for the girls and women.

There are other things too, but I'll find out more about them today when we get up to the MedCen where Tai and Sili are.
